How to create a glamorous bathroom
Bathrooms can be all about the functional – but there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be as glamorous as any other room scheme without compromising their purpose on this earth. So, if your en suite or main bathroom is adults only, why not make it more little black dress and sparkly jewellery than jeans and T-shirt – after all, unlike you, it can rock the look every day.
To pull off a glamorous scheme successfully, you’ll need to think dramatic colour, stylish lighting and luxurious materials, all teamed with a sophisticated white suite.
Choose bathroom fittings
If you have the space, a freestanding bath is a great basis for a glamorous scheme. For an effect that tends to the boutique city hotel rather than country house, choose a contemporary freestanding bath and make it a focal point.
You’re going to be spending some time in a bathroom that looks this good, so consider a bath with a headrest – our Percier design includes this little luxury – so you can indulge in a serious soak. Team with floorstanding taps to create a style statement that’s perfect for a glamorous room.
Make sure your toilet and basin repeat the contemporary lines of your bath if you’re not choosing a suite. Square and structural shapes are ideally suited to this look because the overall feel is confident.
Both inset basins – for a sleek look – or countertop designs to create a feature will complement the rest of the sophisticated fittings.

Create a colour scheme
Dark, sexy tones should dominate in a glamorous bathroom. Walls in shades of grey from mid tones to nearly black look sophisticated and create a dramatic backdrop to the bath and light fittings.
Wall panelling has an upscale effect and is easy to put up, so you don’t need to live in a mansion with original features (phew). If you’re not going to get over-excited and splash the walls of your fabulous new bathroom scheme, wallpaper’s a great alternative. This Stardust design from Graham & Brown has sparkle that’ll look magical in candlelight.

Keep bathroom flooring pale
If your walls are dark, think pale and interesting for the floor otherwise your room will start to feel basement-nightclub oppressive rather than chic and airy. Light-coloured real stone tiles will add to the opulence of your room, but if your budget’s not up to it, just choose a clever lookalike. These Parallel tiles from the HD Origin range at British Ceramic Tile have an authentic travertine effect.
Make the lighting atmospheric
Steer clear of plain lights and choose designs that’ll add glitz to your scheme. With a dark colour palette, you’ll need to ensure the room is bright enough for tasks like putting on make up, but that you can also lower the lights and relax when you want to, so make sure there are layers of light.
Around the mirror, a pair of wall lights – such as the Bassi wall lights from Bathrooms.com – will create balance so your make-up looks exactly how you thought it did when you left the room.
